Dulux Live Painting Project.

Live Painting - I was invited to paint for Dulux at their Let's Colour Studio (as part of Westfield's Home Trends Show). The event offered customers advice on interior design trends, technical aspects of DIY, and colour theory. Against this backdrop I created Art on two adjacent walls.

Here are some pictures of the redecoration of the display walls, as well as painting the famous Dulux Dog. All the art was done using Dulux Matt Emulsion paints and specialist brushes. Dulux staff were also on hand to expertly mix any colour of my choosing. Please click on the image, for my Facebook page showing the art in progress and the final wall paintings.

Project Masr.

Recently I have felt inspired by the extra-odinary display of solidarity, togetherness, and warmth of the Egyptian people - congregating in Tahrir Square to impact change and self determination in their daily lives. When inspired paintings tend to flow, and so here is my artistic response... More Egypt inspired paintings can be found here.

Recent News.

A painting was recently selected for the Hatch Space gallery Launch Event in Deptford, London, see above for the image with multilayered techniques to show the figures in the foreground looking over at the crowd below. It’s in keeping with some paintings I’m exploring responding to the current financial crises, more a parody than anything else. Also, below are 2 new paintings in the series. http://www.hatchspace.co.uk

In other news I've designed a brand new Logo for mo*star art - I hope you'll agree the colour adds a different element. I was interested in mixing the influences of colour, and a colour wheel, with a fluid use of Type to reflect how I see my painting style. I also undertake Graphic Design commissions - see the Links section for more examples of mo*star graphics and if you'd like more information.

A new entry has been added to my Blog section and on Facebook, describing my unlikely adventures at a Sotheby's Contemporary Art Auction.

On November 26th a new painting was exhibited at the Private View of "Relay", a group exhibition by Core Gallery studio artists and guests. I also enjoyed the Open studios, giving me a chance to interact with many Art lovers. See www.coregallery.co.uk for more info.

As well as this I recently exhibiting art at Deptford X, London's foremost contemporary visual arts festival. I now have a London studio space and it was Open studio weekend ... so I had my door open...

A new video has been uploaded of a recent Artist's Talk...click here to enjoy. I've also been painting some new cityscapes...

Thresholds 1.2m by 80cm

Thresholds Project:

For the Third year running I've been invited to take part in a collaborative Interfaith Project, this time to look at the physical and symbolic changes that doorways and thresholds mark. Exploring the idea of “a threshold as a place of risk uncertainty”, I really enjoy creating an element of uncertainty in the painting process. I appreciate that my role is to begin the process, to almost indicate a direction, and that ultimately uncertainty reigns as to how the paint will behave during the process of applying and drying. I see the movement of the paint as somewhat akin to the passing through doorways – for me it is as much about the process as the final piece, the two cannot be separated. The process of dialogue, illustration, visits and thought all combine. To see more of the Project, go to the 'Community and Workshops' page or visit the Facebook page album.

‎"Arab News" and "Bikya Masr" have published articles about my "Thresholds/Urban Dialogues" collaborative project...great news ;p

Installation for 3ff.

Last year I was invited by The Three Faiths Forum to apply for funding for a collaborative Interfaith Art Project. I worked with two talented young artists (Miki Shaw and Rachel Labovitch) and a fantastic musician (Rosalind Parker) - together we won 1 of only 2 nationally awarded prizes to fund our piece. Our proposal was "an installation involving beautiful music, with a light display projecting shapes and patterns, combined with intricate hand-drawn patterns adorning the perimeter". The piece was installed at Candid Arts Trust, to see more of our installation, go to the 'Community and Workshops' page.

This is building on an exhibition I took part in, displaying art at Artifice, in celebration of the launch of Karen Armstrong’s Charter for Compassion and the UK’s first Inter Faith Week. The Three Faiths Forum works to generate understanding, goodwill and friendship in wider society, encouraging intercultural dialogue through the Arts.

Crying Dome II
I've created a short video showing the beginning stages of painting 'Crying Dome II' - here you can see the background being painted in as well as the Dome beginning to take shape.

Wonder What the Time is in London III

A London abstract expressionist painting, "Wonder What the Time is in London III", inspired by the aesthetics of post-modern city life. I try to paint beyond the mundane and lifeless forms we sometimes take buildings to be, and evoke the flux and sudden energy of a city. Here I've used many techniques to compose the final composition, with care to create an overall balance of colours.

This painting has many elements, so it was created in stages. And I do spend a lot of time painting in my mind

...so I put the painting in my room and looked at it day to day, and something was triggered.

I don't force a painting, instead it takes it's natural form and so it was with this piece as influences of abstract expressionism and childhood imagination combined together. Here is a close up of the detail - to see the full length image please visit the Original Paintings page.

"Harvey and the Fountain" is a one off commission, for a father who wanted to capture this moment when his son, Harvey, came running to him with a water droplet hanging from his chin from playing in the fountain. I've tried to capture the softness of the photograph whilst keeping the focus on Harvey's inquisitive face. To see the painting in more detail please navigate to The World Around Us gallery.

A paintbrush reaches on to the canvas, to try to paint a better picture of the present and brighten the future. The brush strokes are tentative, softly trying to repaint the scene, contrasting the surrounding bold, heavy strokes. For a more detailed look please see the Inspirations gallery.

Al Mizan (The Balance)

I am continuing to try to improve my art, experimenting with colour and with texture. I would call this stylised arabic...I've taken a word and concept which means something to me, and tried to create an interesting form - to paint it in a different way.

I personally would not consider this painting as not written "Calligraphy", which is a skill that must be studied to truly be able to write freehand. I try not to do the type of "Calligraphy" which i see as the opposite of the ethos of islamic art and invention - meaning, the kind done using a stencil of Arabic script over a background with little thought of technique or expression. For a closer look please see the 'Inspirations' gallery.

Cityscapes.

Architecture and cities are a consistent theme within my art, I find inspiration in a sense of movement and energy around us.

I'm exploring the theme of movement within cities, and the concept of bringing to life my urban surroundings through painting techniques - capturing energy through fluidity, colour, and vibrant strokes and mark-making.

Some examples of recent Cityscapes can be seen below, with more in the World Around Us gallery section.
